Ever have a dream so wonderful that waking up felt like a disappointment? Those fleeting moments remind us of a unique kind of joy—one that’s often hard to capture. Psalm 126 starts with this sentiment: when the exiles returned to Jerusalem, “it was like a dream.” After years of loss and longing, they experienced the kind of joy that leaves you laughing and singing until you cry. But here’s the thing: why don’t more of us have these “pinch me” moments of joy in our lives?
The Beauty of a Dream Come True
Maybe we don’t have those moments because we don’t expect much. Sometimes, we’re so caught in routines, disappointments, or a fear of hoping that we don’t let ourselves dream big. But dreams matter. Not just the ones that happen while we sleep, but the waking dreams God plants in our hearts. The book of Acts describes a time when the Holy Spirit will be poured out, and people will dream dreams—visions of what’s possible when God’s power meets our willingness.
At our church, we have a vision for what God could do through us. We call it MissionONE—our “envisioned future.” We dream that, together, we could be a place of supernatural unity, a people known for sacrificial love, empowered by prayer, and dedicated to sharing the gospel. We believe this isn’t just our dream; it’s God’s. And for each of us, there’s a role in making it come true. You need a dream like that—one planted by the Holy Spirit for your life, your family, your calling.
Planting in Tears, Harvesting in Joy
Psalm 126 tells us that “those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy.” Here’s a paradox: joy often comes from our deepest wounds. The seeds of joy are planted through hard times, through work that costs us. And this calling doesn’t come without burdens. Even Jesus knew what it meant to be weary. He invited the weary to rest but also called his followers to go out with a mission.
As a church family, we’re always balancing two roles: comforting those who are hurting and equipping them to be part of the work of the gospel. Ministry doesn’t wait for us to have it all together. It finds us right in the middle of our struggles and gives purpose to them. To join the harvest isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment or until the weight has lifted—it’s trusting that God will bring beauty even from our pain.
Finding Your Part in the Mission
So, how do you know what God is calling you to do? Frederick Buechner once said, “The place God calls you to is where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” It’s worth asking: what breaks your heart? What brings you joy? God often calls us to serve where those two things intersect. It’s a brave adventure, this life of faith. You never know how things will turn out, but you’re invited to say yes and make something of your life in the Lord.
Your part in this harvest may be small, a single seed planted in hope. But don’t underestimate it. The harvest is coming, and there will be joy.
